All signs point to not worth the upgrade.
I will wait until my 9700pro is useless before I upgrade.

Then it would be worth it.
I would say wait and see how the ATI cards stack up against it.

I'm still holding on to my GF3 until a game comes out that justifies an upgrade. :D

agreed. even this card slows on doom 3 at the highest rates. no reason to upgrade
if you don't gotta, and the top card will set you back half a grand...

I didn't see that, except for individual tests, the 5900 ultra had the 9700 pro by 600 points, 15808 to 15216 in the overall. Not enough to upgrade from a 9700, though, I would agree. But, those Doom3 scores were sure sexy. I wonder how the 5900 value card, with 128 megs of ram and clocks on memory and proc yet uncertain, will do in that lofty group of cards, cuz I doubt I'll spend $500 for the 5900 Ultra. HAve to see what it actually debuts at, and how it drops. I would think that with the 9700 and 9800 Pros, and the 9800 due to get 256 megs, there should be good competition at the top for our dollar, so I hope the have a price war!

Here's a couple more looks.

Anandtech's peek, with Doom 3 stats (http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1821&p=1)

...and [H]ardOCP's look (http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDc0)

great theory, i would love for it to be true, but I think the high end cards
are for bragging rights only, while they peddle crippled crap for the masses,
and it looks like both companies are going that route.
compare the 9500 to the 9600 or the 4200 to the 5200.
both of the first cards are better than the card that replaces them.
bastards...

:P I'd like to say the same thing, truth is..... I'm just too stinking poor to upgrade!

But if the G-4 4800 drops enough :oooo:

Hey, c'mon, 'crippled crap' is a little extreme, I'd be darn happy with an FX2 "lite", if it sports the same engine and 'only' 128 megs of ram - if it'll push Doom 3. I see your point though, that thing with the ATI cards is odd and confusing unless you're closely following the market - making it downright deceptive to a the less-enthused users. The labelling of the GF4 MX was deceptive as well, I thought. The good thing is that they offer cards at many levels to make better 'fits' for users. I think you'll be right about any quick price drops on those flagship units, though. I was being a bit optimistic, since I can't do anything about it but wait! :P
