Instaling Diablo 2 and the expansion

is there a way to install 2 versions or diablo 2 with one equiped with the expansion, so i can play with people with and without the expansion? sorta like instaling the 1.05 and 1.07 patches

Forgive me if there is information elsewhere that i have missed, but are there many people on this webpage playing this game? (I am told it is old) It has kept me up on more than a few nights, and i may soon dabble with the online aspect. It would be nice to be involved in a team of sorts.

A further question - is it worth buying the original game if i started with the sequel? I have finished the latter, and would like to play on. However, my kids tell me, in no uncertain terms, that the original 'sucks' by comparison.

Needless to say, i would like a second opinion.
