Yeah, we've watched it unfold with trepidation, and though this is just one case, it sends tremors of fear throughout the industry. Consumer confidence will be an issue if they aren't able to contain it, and even one more incidence could have big ramifications. For me, I find it hard to believe that you could even have one isolated case, so I'm wishing them luck in getting it corralled, so to speak.

Serioulsy tho, Mod, thanks for the quick post....this has got a lot of media play here in the states. The parts affected by mad cow aren't sold in the US...(brains) but I guess that doesn't mean that the disease won't be spread by blood or any other tissue. I don't eat a lot of red meat anyway, but this could prove a big problem. Some of the major meat processors in the states are already seeing a drop in stocks, even though they say it was only one cow and it has been destroyed. Still makes you think...I guess if I got good in Sam, you would all know that I have mad cow.

this is how it's spread without eating the brains: Nervous tissue also contains the disease, so when ground beef is made in poor conditions, and those hotdogs that have "by-products" are made, they all have a surprising about of nervou tissue in them... :S i'll assume you all know what happens from there on :S

I too reside in Alberta and beef being one of our key exports in this province second only to oil and gas it impacted the local economy very hard. Foreign borders are already starting bans on US beef products as they did to ours earlier in the year. This also drastically affects the price of the beef that is deemed safe for sale. I hope that solutions and safety measures can be implemented before this very serious problem has even deeper ramifications than it already has.

P.S. If you are really worried, eat moose, 5000 wolves can't be wrong
