View Full Version : Nvidia's 40.72 get MS's WHQL today

For those of you that don't like using beta drivers or haven't upgraded already, I thought you might like to know Microsoft has given the Nvidia v40.72 drivers their WHQL Certification today for all Windows OSs. Nvidia claims "Up to a 25% increase in performance". I don't know it they are talking about vs. the 30.82s.
For what it's worth, I've been using the beta version of the 40.72s for some time now and they have worked great for me. :)
You can download them from HERE (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp).

I've been using the 40.71's for a while and they are good too.

OK, it's me, the problem child. I downloaded the drivers, and got this error message:
NVIDIA Setup Error
Setup was unable to locate the following .INF file needed for this installation.
The installation will be terminated.

I closed out the error message, then got the message saying the installation was complete and was asked if I wanted to restart my computer now or later.

How can I tell if the new drivers installed?

Well I looked in the add/remove thingy, and it showed the drivers there, I think......it didn't say what # they were, it just said windows 95,98,ME drivers, so I suppose they could still be the older drivers.

I did a search for all files (by date) created today. The folder is there for the new drivers. I opened it up, and my monitor caught fire....is that normal?

Lets see Machine, Who was it that talked me into upgrading to the v40.72s? Hmmmm I wonder who that was?
I sure thought it was you. I might be wrong. Maybe you said get the latest or newer. I don't remember, I slept since then. :P

HPC: On your desktop right click, select properties, Click settings, Click Advanced, Select your video card tab and you should see a screen like this. The last four numbers tell you which version you are using. (This is for Win98)

Well, it showed the old drivers still in use. I'm missing the following file: NV4_DISP.INF

Here's a post at Anandtech that shows how to fix that. Just follow the instructions in the second post.

It would be cool if someone who is using the 30.82s would run a 3DMark2001 benchmark before upgrading to the 40.72s and lets see the difference afterwards. You can download 3DMark2001 HERE (http://www.madonion.com/)

40.72 gave me problems with a couple of games

Also does MS still make them take out the overclock panel for the WHQL drivers ?

I'm not sure about all cards, My Gainward comes with a OC tool that still works.
There are programs that allow you to OC if you need/want to.
Just look around on the tweak sites or do you need a link?

HPC look and see if you have a C:\NVIDIA\Win9x\40.72 folder and direct it to that folder. (I used Win9x as an example)

Hey Nob,
Which games and what kind of problems?
What did you do to resolve it?

Some people have been un-installing the old drivers from the control panel and re-installing the newer ones to fix problems. You prob'ly already knew that.

The main one is Emperor. The game flashes while playing like something is trying to pop up. To fix it I went back to 30.87 I think. They worked a little better for me than the official 30.82 drivers.

Hell, I'll probably just wait and have someone else do everything, I'm too afraid I'll screw something up. Ya but Shogun, when you bring the program up, it says in the right hand corner what your res is at. There is a button there to change the settings. It will default run at your desktop setting. So if Spike has the same resolution setting as you, then you can compare. That is all I was saying. :)

Yes but if you run the Default bench it sets your res to 1024x768 for the test.

All I did was hit "Benchmark" and it ran at 1024x768 as it shows in the pic.
