View Full Version : No boost dodge? (in 2k4)

One of the first things I noticed about 2k4 is that the movement is somewhat different than 2k3. Most notably, boost dodging. Like how its in 2k3....and NOT in 2k4.

Why would they fix something that wasn't broken in the first place. The only reason I can think of is that they nerfed alot of the movement in order to reduce the learning curve of the game so newbies can still get a couple kills.

This really bothers me...because learning new awsome jumps was one of my favorite things to do in 2k3, but now it seems like trick jumping in 2k4 will be equivilant to trick jumping in Quake III.

That is a pisser. I could hardly boost dodge anyway...I needed a cane to move in 2K3, so maybe this will balance it out a bit, so those of us that have five thumbs on each hand can be a little more competitive.

Yeah it sucks because I was getting better with the boost dodging in 2k3.

I definetly miss the boost dodge from UT2K3.. but hey.. maybe they have other things up their sleave for me to learn in 2K4.

Also.. I heard that there will be a "2K3 jump" mod where you can make it like it used to be. So who knows.

However the tourney organizers run it.. that's how Ill play it.

boost dodge is still in 2k4, however the timing of the key presses has changed, from what i have read is that it is still the same key combinations, only faster, which is a pisser because it was hard enough to master in 2k3

It's still in there and the same key combination.. it's just that it doesn't bounce you UP like it did in UT2K3. It's more of a forward and down movement. Ive found a couple places to use it.. but it's not AS cool as it was in UT2K3.

Like I said.. who knows what they have in store. It's just the demo.

Has got nothing to do with demo or full/final i think. The trickjump known as boostdodge in 2k3 was based on some kind of error whitin the engine , so the jump was not intended.
Though u can still do it in 2k4 but uŽll get as far as a normal dodge + jump.

Thats right, i had read something about that error within the engine. this jump was not supposed to exist hehehe

i dont believe that was an engine error, if it was an unintentional movement due to an engine error Epic would have fixed it in one of the patches...were double jump and wall dodge errors as well?

Maybe you are right, I just report what i saw, many websites are talking about this "engine error". Well, it dont makes the system crash so, maybe that epic thought that it was okay to let it that way, i really dont know.

Of course double jump and walldodge were no errors. First of all it took a long time till some1 found the so called boost dodge ( by chance ). So why didnt epic tell us from the start there was something like a boostdodge ???

I dont know why there was no patch but i got some ideas...

1. As i already mentioned it took a long time ... means they were fully concentrated on 2k4 and maybe didnt see it as a real problem to fix for 2k3.

2. How do u know this is fixable with a simple patch ? Maybe a patch would have been to much work.

Hey i dont know for sure either ... but im pretty sure it was a mistake

no way was it an error. If it was an error.. there wouldn't have been a dedicated animation for it when you do it. The player model leaps up on the wall and "boosts" off of it.

Oh boy , cant u have a discussion without offending others ?

Think what u want but the boost dodge as we know it is definitely an error which has been fixed in 2k4. Go to the Epic forums and ask if u want.

i contacted Wormbo(the coder of AntiTCC, he knows alot about the engine ;) ) and he told me that it is/was a bug in the engine, cause cliffyb and co were very surpised as all people begun talking about the boostdoge and didnt believe it until someone showed it to them.

as for ut2k4, its no bug anymore...cause they 've fixed it, but cause all people like it they include it(together with the fast weaponswitch) as a mutator :)

Atari Forums

nVo`ut|Breach> MarkRein[Epic] has the boost dodge physics error been ironed out or will it be left in?
<MarkRein[Epic]> nVo`ut|Breach--> Again you're asking the kind of thing I wouldn't know

Didn't DrSiN said in the other chat that they had fix the physics...

Red[GummiBear]
02-26-2004, 09:33 PM
lol, and until i see some actual proof of it being an error, then its hearsay, but i still highly doubt it....they wouldnt have nerfed it in 2k4 if they left it because everyone liked it, i dunno

and on another note, i dont see where i was saying anything offensive to you and i am wondering where your statement comes from, you make it sound like every statement i make is offensive to someone, i said its a laughable thought it was an engine mistake, if you dont like it tough ****, how ya like that?

It was a bug...one of the few nice ones to have. They said they were going to make it a real jump in 2004 and put it in the instruction manual, but I dont know anymore. Is it really gone?...I gotta d/l this demo. Trick jumping was probably gonna be the only reason why I was gonna buy this game :/ .

It seems to me like the boost jump is in the demo but you have to do the key presses a lot faster.
