Well my comp toally bit the bullet tongiht. It crahsed about 20 times today and I think my hard drive became bad. Because everytime Id restart it would start freezing in windows on boot. So I got so frustrated that I formatted my hard drive (I backed it up though). And then trying to install windows again it was freezing in DOS. So i ripped out my 16gig hard drive and made my 80 gig western digital the master. Win98 installed perfectly, and when I went to go install WiNXP professional, it freezes during the setup. So i said **** WinXP, setup my DSL and here I am now. On Win98SE with 16 colors on 640x480 res, with only my DSL setup. Wow is all I can say. I will see though if my school has Win2000 so I can check it out and install that. WinXP was great but now I hate it cause it just ****ed everytihng up.

Why did you install 98 first ? You should have just tried XP on a clean drive.

It had always crashed like that ever since I upgraded my comp. But today (and even yesterday) it started to crash more often in my games, then it started crashing in windows, then DOS. I thought it was my video card (as you can see in the Hardware section) but I put in my old GF2 and set that up and it still froze.

Im still using the 384 Cruical micron 384 DDR ram I got with my other new stuff. I did get an error in my VIA drivers though. It said query registration failed! Contact with manaufacturer!! Even though I did update those as well.

Strange, sounds like a bios issue. Have you got the latest bios for your chipset?

MR. SLiK

I downloaded the latest drivers from the via website (the 4in1 or whatever) because when I first booted my new computer I got this error. I installed them and I stll was getting the same error but my comp still worked fine so I ignored it.

Nope 98 is working fine. Its boots much faster to. I had a problem with WinXP where it took forever to boot for some reason. Happened with my 600 comp also.

Question, did the computer ever restart by itself?

MR. SLiK
09-19-2002, 04:10 AM
Yep, 2 times. One time when I right clicked to exit my dsl gateway program (I thought I had someone attacking me) and once when I double clicked to reinstall the 30.82 drivers.

MR. SLiK

Well it looks like a bios issue......but to tell you the truth i think is those evil via drivers and chipsets.....i got a nforce board to avoid them entirely.....it says to load the latest via drivers to fix that problem you version 4.42 im sure you have done that....sorry but i think via is your problem...... :(

That should be sufficient. I had a similiar problem happen to me, and I asumed it was XP. My computer would continue to crash and restart itself. It was very random. Sometimes during boot up, sometimes 5 min in to a game. I finally figured out my chip was not getting enough juice. I bought a 450 watt power supply, it hasn't crashed since.
