I just spent 30 minutes trying to figure out why my brand new MX700 kept moving to the left on my screen. Turn out there was just a piece of dog hair over the sensor :D

Mine seems a little jumpy at times. Like if I move it down, it will jump to the left. I have it on a mouse pad, and wondering if it is too shiny for it. My old mouse was an optical one too and never did that.

Try just using it without a mousepad and see how it works. Opticals are made to be used without mousepads. As long as you don't have a glass or mirror desk, you will get better performance without the pad.

I did that, seems to work much better. I was using a Dell one that came with the puter. Always got dirt spots on it, so probably now will get it on the desk lol
