Argh my computer AGAIN is freezing and crashing a lot. I turned it off for like 20 min and rebooted and it seems fine right now. I think Slice is right. I think its my power supply since it keeps crashing. Its so frustrating!!!!!!

Can you llok in your Bios to see what your cpu temp and mobo temp is right after you reboot after a freeze? What video drivers are you using? What are you doing when it freezes?

MR. SLiK
09-20-2002, 12:02 AM
My temp rises a little bit after a crash I noticed. It shrotly crashed again after I made that post. Im using the 30.82 video card drivers and I tried the 40.41 but it still crashed. I also tried using my old GF2 but it also kept crashing with that also. I tried to play UT2k3 and it gives an error now, saying Bad Export. I used to be able to play it now I cant. If I go into it, it gives me an error, and then a few secs later my comp freezes. I think it maybe my power supply or maybe my motherboard?

Slice
09-20-2002, 01:25 AM
Dude your power supply is bad! Or something isn't getting the power it needs. I knew that it wasn't XP when I asked you last night. I had a feeling that it was going to happen with 98 too. :(

MR. SLiK
09-20-2002, 01:35 AM
Maybe Slice. I took off the case of my computer to check the Code it would give after the comp would freeze. To my surprise, the computer is working much better, I got into UT2k3, but when I ran Quake3 it froze immediately. Its working right now which is nice, but I still dont know whats wrong. I installed the via drivers off the cd right now and am going to reboot soon.

Btw the code I cotinuely get (hopefully Nob reads this) is FF or Boot Attempt. After it starts loading Win98 it stays at FF even when it freezes. FF was the code I was getting when the processor wasnt seated properly and the comp wouldnt boot.

You can ignore the codes on the board after the computer boots. This is from the Epox site :

Why does the POST LED not stay at FF after booting?
The Power On Self Test (POST) LED is a troubleshooting tool used during the boot up to diagnose problems. However, after the system completes the POST procedure and control is passed over to your operating system the information displayed is of no value. At this point any information displayed on the LED can be ignored. The POST LED feature obtains its information from address port 80h. But after boot the operating system and/or software may write to port 80h causing the display to change - there is no reason for concern.

What are your temps reported by the bios ?

MR. SLiK
09-20-2002, 02:54 AM
When I booted it up this time (after letting it sit off for a while after it crashed) it was at 89F. But usually when it crashes it goes up to 109/111 F. I think I may have a bad power supply like Slice said.

I might try the ram thing... but i dont know fi its that. Since the first day after I built the computer I was playing Sam single player and all of the sudden it just totally locked up the computer. The lock ups were rare till this week. I installed Serious Sam FE and it crashed A LOT and got illegal operations a lot. Then yesterday it got REAL bad. About 2 secs into any game it would lock the computer, so I thought it was this gf3 i had. Then I put in my gf2 and the locks get worse. It starts locking in windows when i just booted up. So I put back in my gf3 and it kept locking in windows and even loading windows.

I am not positive it's power related, but it sounds that way. However Via has some bad problems with power distribution across the chipset, like getting the ram enough juice to keep it sustained. Maybe Machine knows something about it, and he can help you? Don't buy a new power supply until you talk to him. Unless you are sure that is the issue. ;)

XP not installing is a sign of trouble. I would remove everything but video card and ram and try installing again. Just like we did when finding your original problem start with the basics and see if it works.

Did you try to update your VIA 4-in-1 drivers? Lockups are usually due to heat, RAM, or drivers.
Windoze98se sux btw. LOL

I've never had a problem with VIA chipsets or AMD systems. You could have a bad motherboard. Do what was said earlier about trying 1 stick or RAM at a time in slot 1. This will eliminate your RAM. We know it is not your video card since it does it with your old one. The temp you listed a while ago is your CPU temp right? If so that is OK. If that is your motherboard temp than you need better case cooling.
Did you say XP would not install?

Nobody
09-20-2002, 11:04 AM
Hey Machine he said the install for XP would hang which is not a good sign. The last I heard from him it seemed to be working with the one 256 stick in. He said he just picked a 128 stick from the same page and did not notice the specs on it. I guess he will post today if he is still having problems.

Yah that is a good CPU temp. Processor is probably good. It does sound like a RAM problem or posibly the mobo. If he is locking up during an OS install than it is probably a hardware problem I would think. Unless he has been messing around in the bios.

MR. SLiK
09-22-2002, 02:05 AM
I do hvae AC. I just didnt turn it on yesterday. This room can either be really cold or really hot. Its strange. My processor temp has been at about 107 F today athlough it did crash cause of this weird thing im getting (see paragraph below for that). It was at 114 F last time I checked but nothing has happened so far. It has locked up at night (when my processor temp drops to like 90F) a few times so I dont know fi its entirely a heat problem. Could be the motherboard or pwoer suply? Im not really sure.

In Sam sometimes, it randomly decides to change my monitor refresh rate to 85 (it cant go above 75) therefore screwing it up so I cant see anything. And when I restart, under my adapter the refresh rate drop down menu is gone. I have to restart a few times for it come back. Very strange. Other than that it hasnt randomly locked up. Right now the AC is on but its still hot. Im sweating. I had my refresh rate at OPtimal now I just set it to 70. Im using the 98 drivers 30.82, and they work perfectly on my other comp (which also is on 98SE). It never did this in XP.
