I have just been called a cheap ass ( :tounge: SALvation!) for not having an optical mouse yet. Some of you guys have recently gotten the MX700, but I hear a lot of "I'm still getting used to it  " and "The damn buttons don't work :WTF: ".

So what is the best mouse for gaming? I don't really want one with a bunch of buttons on it because I'll just be pushing the wrong ones or bumping it into my keyboard and pushing them accidently.

I also think I'm going to need a mousepad for it because the surface of the table that my computer is on is not in very good condition. It's an old drafting table and has cuts and nicks in it. I want a big pad - I think I read where someone mentioned something about a desk pad. That sounds big enough.

Suggestions please!

I've got an Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 from microsoft... I really like it... it's fast, smooth, fits in my hand nicely... it's got two thumb buttons a scrolly thingy and a button there too (along with right and left click obviously)... it's silver colored with red light... it's sweet

for an optical mouse your best bet would be to get a ratpad. i think its www.ratpadz.com . i have one of these that i use with my microsoft optical mouse and its awesome, the mouse glides over the surface very easily. if you cant afford one or dont want to wait, you can go to walmart or a kitchen store and buy a cheap, plastic cuttingboards, they are made of the same material, just make sure it is a dark color

For a wired mouse, I agree with the Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 from microsoft. However, if you want to go wireless, the recommendation is, if you can afford it, go with the Microsoft Desktop for Bluetooth, around $150. If budget is tight, go with the MX700 from logitech.

I've actually heard more often than not that the MX700 has less problems than the bluetooth and is also much cheaper... you might consider looking on www.tomshardware.com and see if there are any articles about mice

Red, I also suggested that mousepad in the Mousepad thread... I agree with you... they roxor my soxorz

If you want optical but still want to be a cheap ass, go with the Intellimouse :D

If you want to be a man and get the latest and greatest get the MX700. It is different technology than Microsoft's wireless mouse (MS uses Bluetooth and Logitech uses RF signals) and offers a bit better response time. Actually, the MX700 has the same refresh rate as a wired mouse so there is absolutely no wireless lag. Here is a nice review for you:

And in closing, Machine uses an MX700. Case closed. :D

The MX700 rules. It is a little more reactive then my old one, that he about what I am getting used to now. Other then that, the buttons have configured for it all work.

I think I need to go to Best Buy to get a feel for the MX700. It's temping but the thumb buttons make me nervous. I also read somewhere that it was rather large.

The RatPad sounds pretty nice.

I prefer the MS Intellimouse Optical over the Explorer, but I haven't tried the 3.0. I like the 4 buttons beside the wheel, and it fits my hand nicely. The Explorer looks nice, and has the buttons, too, but differently placed. I'm not sure which I'd like better, as I couldn't get my hands on the Explorer to try out.

Well, I've decided to go with the Intellimouse Explorer 3. I think the MX700 is probably overkill for me. It's very expensive and has features I almost certainly would never use.

I'm also gonna get a ratpad. I will be ordering both shortly.

Thanks guys!

Oh well, I guess I will not be getting a rat pad. They aren't in stock anywhere I looked. And I hate buying stuff on back order. :(
