Could anyone please tell me what causes lagg and if there is any way to solve this problem? ....somedays it seems that I cannot even play any games for instance if I am in a ss frag match it is fine but then I go to battlefield 1942 and I get disconnected for causing too much lagg but somedays it is fine with 1942 and not with ss. I always thought lagg was caused by your connection ( I have cable modem connection) and if it is how can it effect the games I play in two different ways. Also is there a site that has something that will let me know what my download speed is?

PCpitstop can test your connection. If you have anything running in the background, that can cause lag. If you have your video settings jacked up, that can cause lag also. Whatever makes your system use resources that you should be using for your game may cause lag. I tend to shut everything down when I play...oh yeah, and don't record a demo and try to play either...that beat the hell out of my machine, and mine is speedy.

PCpitstop is a great tool. Opened up my bandwith when @home shut down and suck my Cox Communications took over but choked the bandwidth so you wouldn't overload the new system.

A lot of things go into 'lag', and it might not be on 'your end', so to speak. Do the PCpitstop things (I haven't been there before, am going after this post) and Broadband Reports (http://www.broadbandreports.com/) is another place to test your connection. Other than that, you can do a Trace Route from a command prompt to the ip of the server to see how many 'hops' it takes to get there, and where those 'hops' are. From the command prompt, you type in "tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" to get a display of the route your connection takes to get to that IP.

Like Death-Dude said it might not be on your end. I'm going through the same stuff right now with my ISP going on three weeks now. This screenshot shows what my hops look like to GameMecca and is from a program called NeoTrace, It does the same thing as the Tracert command, But gives you some information about the hops and has a option to show you the hop locations using a map of the world.

is that program free?? That could be a very helpful tool. Shogun, you should try connection to one of the game servers and see what it looks like ;)

Whenever I look at a trace route, I'm amazed any of these games play! How much info are they sending 10 - 20 hops, to 15 players simultaneously!

Nope not while in the game, But if you know the server's IP address, You can ping the server's IP address and see what you ping times and hops look like.

When you click on it in the menu it shows you in the info, or type "stat net" in the console (minus " ") to get net info, I think it had ip in it. Of course, if you pull down the console and scroll up, it should be there, too.
