:hmmm: You running Win XP?
If you do have you tried sys restore? Sometimes that clears up unexplainable sys changes

Pure Here ya go
go to the link below and download the version for Windows XP following these instructions:
Windows XP:
Download the copy for your Windows version and unzip it first into the folder C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache (overwriting any existing copy), then into the folder it needs to go for your Windows version.
After doing the above place a copy in C:\WINDOWS and C:\WINDOWS\System32
This should solve your problem. I hope :oooo:

You can try Frag's way, but for your question Pure the answer is........
yes/no.......sorry for the ambigous answer but that is the answer to your question.
The only thing you will lose is anything you might have saved or altered in Windows since your last restore point. If you havent say saved any new files since then, or added new apps since your last restore point then the answer is no, you will not lose anything but your Windows should get restored to that save point.
Also with xp's system restore it can automatically save at certain points or what I really like is you can specify when you want to make system restore point. Like when everything in Windows works as it should ie. Notepad etc you should specify and make a system restore point.
Windows XP tells you, that you can undo any restore by reverting back to your previous restore point Right now you should be able to specify a system restore point just to be sure. Then the worst thing that would happen is your back where you started, note pad not working. But usually like I said unless you've add files new apps then you shouldn't lose anything.
Note: ***
System Restore is enabled on all drives when you first start your new computer or when the operating system is installed, unless you have less than 200 MB of available space on the hard disk (or the partition that contains your operating system folder).
If you do not have enough disk space available when your operating system is installed, then you must turn on System Restore, using the preceding steps, after you have made sufficient disk space available.
If you run out of disk space, System Restore becomes inactive. When you have made sufficient disk space available, System Restore is automatically activated, but all previous restore points are lost.
When System Restore is turned off on a partition or drive, all restore points stored on that partition or drive are deleted. Changes that are made on an excluded partition or drive are not reverted during a System Restore.
Pure you can go back as little or as far as the "made" allocated restore points!
But this should restore your windows sys folder to working order, depending on when you lost functionality of window notepad.
You can try all of your restore points up to the amount that have been "saved" and still revert back to anyone of those that you wish !
Hope that helps.........I have to stop here before I get anymore confuzzing :P
