I'm trying to re-install Win2K on Sifi's hard drive. I deleted the old partition and created a new one. When I go to format it it seems to go fine until it reaches 49% complete, then it just stays there. No error messages, the drive light is still on, but it never changes from 49%. :bandhead:

Any thoughts?

Are you reformatting the whole drive or just certain partitions?

I was trying to format the whole 80gig drive. I'm assuming now that there is a bad spot on it about half way through. So I made a 35 Gig partition and am currently formatting that. I'll let you know what happens. :WTF:

Sirc some harddrive manuf. have a hd utility you can download that will check the drive out for bad sectors and stuff. I've had to run them before they would issue an RMA for replacement.

How are you trying to format?

a boot up disk or Win2k CD?

I was using the Win2K disk. When I made a 35 Gig partition it worked. So the HD probably has a bad spot. This will do for the time being until I have the time to replace it.

I assume he had just one partition on the drive before, at the full 80, but did you do an FDISK to check out the partitions? You could do that just to make sure everythings OK, or just delete and re-establish the partition, reformat, and see how that goes.

Will be interesting to see if you can format the other partition now.

It had 1 80 Gig partition to start with. I booted from the Win2K CD and deleted the partition and created a single new partition that was also 80 gig. While formating it would stop at 49% complete.

It's up and running now. We also installed Unreal II and it works too.
