The Word Anime
If you do a search on 'what is anime' or 'anime introduction' using a web search engine, you'll find tons of links and descriptions. What I am going to do here is to sum them up. So, what is anime? Anime is the most common word used by fans to refer to Japanese Animation.

Is anime the same as cartoon? Technically yes, however for anime fans, anime is not cartoon. See the definition above, anime refers to Japanese animation. So, the rule of thumb is as simple as: if it's not originated from Japan then it's not an anime (while the contrary is not true).

People usually think that anime is the animated version of japanese comic (manga). While in most cases this is true, however, not all anime is based on manga. For example, some anime are based on video games like Sakura Taisen and Tales of Eternia.

Im bored so I did that.. w00t!

You'll notice that the characters have vibrant haircolors such as yellow, pink, blue, and green. Also they have distinctive hairstyles such as ponytails, pigtails and decorative ribbons. In many cases these hairstyles are exaggerated beyond the laws of physics. These traits are used in Japanese animation as techniques to easily differentiate the main characters as it is far easier to tell characters apart when they have strikingly different haircolors and styles. Since many women in Japan wear such hairstyles and accessories including many singers and actresses are in their 20's and 30's, such styles are common place in the culture. Other frequent images in Japanimation include school uniforms such as sailor style blouses, skirt and blazer outfits. School uniforms have been mandatory in Japan since the late 1800's

One question most people ask is "why are their eyes so big?" This technique dates back to the original western influence on Japan of animated characters such as Betty Boob and early Walt Disney characters in the 1930's. Since then the big eyes have been a standard feature in almost all animation in manga comic book characters in Japan.
