So I'm looking for a new app to transfer/synchronize files over the web. I used to use AIM, but recently it is a pain in the rear since they did away with being able to transfer a folder at a time (rather than just a single file).

I have tried Skype which requires too much overhead if transferring lots of files at once.

Right now, I'm using UltraVNC as it's better than AIM or Skype in terms of transferring whole folders. However, it drops the connection far to frequently for my taste when doing large transfers.

I'm looking for a reasonably fast application that will allow me to transfer files to various PCs across town on the internet. Specifically, I need to be able to transfer multiple nested folders and have them show up the same way at the other end.

If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them. Thanks.

DE, I think FTP software is probably the best answer considering you need the files to be place in specific folders. You should map each folder directly so all data goes to its specific folder. UVNC also works good but that requires you to log on to the other computer and manually do it. You should be able to set up a ftp sync in most apps.

You also can have windows log in to the other computer via vpn and have all folders mapped to you. This would be as good as any and have a sync switch with the data.

you could also use Hamachi (www.hamachi.cc) to make a private, encrypted vpn and then use the Synctoy powertoy provided free from Microcrap

LogMeIn Hamachi is a new one for me. I'll check that out. It does look like FTP is going to be the solution though as it is definitely proven and as secure as I need it to be. If anyone has experience/suggestions on how to setup an FTP server on a WinXP box, I'd appreciate it. I'm sure I can find a few websites, so I'll google it and see what I find.

I tried out GuildFTP last night and it is indeed easy to setup. I had to port forward port 21 on the remote side, but after that, it worked like a charm.

I added a user with admin rights and gave it access to the entire c:\. Then I sync'd about 2GB overnight. Thanks for the suggestion huggy.

FWIW, use caution when you setup this server (or any other FTP server, for that matter). It took less than 24 hours before I started getting annoyed with all of the other "users" that were logged on. I banned a few of the ones that were clearly trying to crack the all purpose admin log on (no writes for anonymous logins). And then removed the anonymous user altogether.
