Hey guys. I am looking for some suggestions and hopefully someone can lead me to a solution that will make life a bit easier for me and save me time .

I have been encoding my video into mpeg2 but the file size has been large along with quality not looking as good.

I am into HD encoding and want to encode using h264HD.

Is there anyone doing this here? What software are you using or what can you suggest. I am not against paying for it but want something that is pretty easy and will allow me to recreate my library into a divx with h264 codecs. Quality is important but so is size. I want to be able to stream this on local network and have it displayed on media center.

A problem I have currently is my home movies which many software suites do not support because it's HD. I have AVID, Adobe full suitte and neither allow me to edit the media because they do not support the format the camera uses. I am maybe considering just using pinnacles stuff which is decent but may look at Sony's latest and greatest. I would like a simple utility that I can rip my own DVD's created and owned into a smaller package. This is where I am looking for help.

Please reply if you can help, thanks.

Hey Mr. Bigg, I have no experience with what you are describing......however, I do get alot of emails from a site called "afterdawn.com". Good luck with what you're trying to accomplish. :)

I know DVD shrink will rip any dvd movie and has compression controls. Not stellar but might be a start

I am not really looking to rip my dvd's as I already do that. DVD shrink is so yesterday also. You may want to look at a program called fab decrypt.

What I am asking is for suggestions to take my ripped and home video to a divx mpeg4 format with ease. DVD shrink and such are programs that shrink the file but the format is still the same with less quality. I want great quality and smaller file size. I want to be able to get atleast 720p from the HD stuff.

I see there are divx rippers and stuff like that but the reason I posted is in hope that someone may be doing this and being able to point me in the right direction having tested a particular program.

Thanks for the link HPC will look into that.

Big.... I don't know exactly what you're looking for, but there are quite a few "how to" sites out there for encoding videos. Probably one of the best with regard to how to setup the software tools is www.doom9.org. Here's a direct link to how to setup to encode using x264: http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main6.htm.

Thanks DE for the link.

As for what I am looking for is suggestions from someone that is already using a certain program or utility they find good which will allow me to bypass the testing of other apps.

I will check out these links provided and see what they are using. If someone else here is using a program, it would be a lot easier to be able to get intouch and communicate if needed.

Bigg -

I've tried 2 programs with so-so success. However, both are small and free so what the hell eh?

One is mediacoder:
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/

The other is VLC:
http://www.videolan.org/

Interestingly enough, I recently bought a couple Sansa Media Players. Sansa has software that encodes videos in an mp4 format for the player. So far, it's actually worked really, really well.

I would THINK it's a standard mp4 file. It's also free, so it might be worth a try as well. Just click where it says 'Skip Registration' below the email and password boxes.
