convert m4a files to mp3, best free way to do this? Itunes wouldn't do some because it said file was protected. I downloaded the files FROM itunes :mad:

burn a cd and rip it will always work. I think there is some software that can play the music and intercept the audio stream to generate mp3s, but you will need to research that...

So wait - you downloaded it from iTunes and you CAN'T burn it to a CD?

I can burn it, I just can't convert it to MP3...

Oh. Well if you can burn it to a CD then just use any program you want to rip it back to mp3 or wma.

Once you burn it, it's just a CD and you should be fine.

tried that, says it's protected,cant be converted.

If the file is in your itunes library. Right click the file, select convert to mp3 on the drop down menu.
or
rename the file .wav

use another cd ripper if it can't convert the cd, there is no real drm on cds, that is just something apple is doing.

I would also recommend going into the preferrences and changing the import format to MP3 from AAC

doesn't matter what I do, I get the no can do from iTunes. It wont allow conversion of 6 songs, and can't order them in another format. I tried switching the import settings to mp3, then downloading, and still get denied!
