Here's a pretty good article on a GPU heatsink mod from over at Overclockercafe. LINK (http://www.overclockercafe.com/Articles/GPU-HSF_Removal/index.html)
Yeah I know you all have seen this done before, But this is one of the few that mentions lapping/polishing the GPU for maximum contact. I've done this mod before on a GF2 GTS and you would be surprised that they are not as flat as you think. Just don't go crazy with the sanding and you should be OK. Also if you do this, I'm pretty sure you can kiss your warranty goodbye! :P

Here's some more info from Sysopt.com on lapping with some graphs showing if it's really worth it. LINK (http://www.sysopt.com/articles/lap/index.html)
This picture shows that the heatsink is really only making contact (lighter part) on the edges of the GPU.
