My roomates rig is doing some odd stuff.
The Hard drive keeps clicking on and off. It has done this in the past
and I changed out the hd and the problem went away and now its back.
I have run tests on the drive and all is well.
Could it be the power supply or something else
I say something else.

hmmm.... by on and off do you mean it's workign by itself sometimes or it shuts down sometimes?

It does not shut down just clicks off then back on.

If it keeps lighting up by itself turn off indexing in the search window, if it shuts down by itself it's probably pushing the power supply over the edge.

Sorry didn't see your post. Probably pushing the PSU over the limit.

He's got a 350watt ps with a voodoo card.
I don't think it's pushing the PS

Sounds like the IDE cable is bad to me.

I suggest burning your data to CD ASAP. Clicking hard drive = dying hard drive.

That is funny that you replaced the HD and later on it started happening again. Based upon what the hard drive connects to, the mobo, if there is a fault a new HD maybe be able to take it for so long, but the tollerances that is has will break down aftera while and create the same thing.

Just something from my electrical past that I have gained. Asus A7N8X Deluxe suggestion, $150 at newegg :D

I think it was the IDE cable. I've had 2 to go bad in the last couple years. I could hear the hd starting and stopping.

A true test IMO is at least 48 hours.

Hey man what do you think of the case I want.
Worth the $$

Update.
I spent the last 2 days trying to figure out why the damn hd keeps clicking.
Finally I got so upset I smashed it on the table until it sounded like an rc car.
Needless to say I bought I new hd, new mb and a new ps.
Turns out the ps had a minor short in it which somehow zapped the mb causeing the hd to malfunction.

Just got done reformatting and loading windows.
Everything seems fine.

That's usually an easy test as well, as most folks have at least one extra around. If not, maybe the PS isn't putting out as it should or something, I'd investigate that next if the cable doesn't solve. Could the controller itself be flaking and causing problems? That would drive you nuts trying to diagnose.

I experienced strange clicking noises coming from my hard drive a couple years back. I lost the hard drive twice and a cpu. Before the third hard drive crashed, It was recommended that I get a APC back-UPS unit because they thought that I might be experiencing a voltage fluctuation and the unit would regulate it. No problems since. As a matter of fact, I run a back-UPS unit on all of my PC's now!
