Who has tried out the beta? Any good?
Have not tried it but I will be picking it up upon release.
I've tried the Beta. I thought the game was a lot of fun, I enjoyed it a lot.
Note, however: This is the first MMORPG that I've ever played....so when I say that I enjoy it, I have no other experience to compare it to....no WoW, or DOAC, or Everquest, or whatever other games like this there are...
But I liked it!
It's not a bad deal to try the beta, especially if you think you're gonna buy the game anyways. Look at it this way:
If you plan on buying on release, you plan on dropping 50 bucks on it...
Why not go to Best buy, or compusa or whatever, and buy the pre-order for 10 bucks...then you can play the beta. If you like the beta, you drop the other 40 into it and play...if you don't...you spent 10 bucks to decide not to spend 50 bucks...
That's why I bought the pre-order.
Granted there's only 1 beta weekend left, and it's only 2 days long, but that's still ample time to get a feel of whether or not you enjoy it, I think.
Anyways, I'm willing to give it my recommendation, as long as you're willing to not beat me up if you get it and disagree!
it is uber, i preordered it and played in the beta.
Machine needs to find another FPS and stay off the MMORPG crack. :P I don't even want to try it because I think I will get addicted to it.
A lot of our members are into GW...so much so that the few Sam and UT players we have left are in the minority !! :bawling:
Check out our section about it sometime..
GW has NOTHING on WoW...it does look better as far as graphics and stuff are concerned, but i think WoW is still visually more stunning. The learning curve for GW was not a curve at all...in fact, i found it to me more of a vertical line then a wall. I didnt like the layout for anything and you HAVE to know the shortcuts for EVREYTHING (inv, char sheet, skills, etc) because there are no buttons to click on like in WoW or Diablo 2 or any other game of that genre i have played. WoW IS worth the 15 dollars a month...EASILY
I refuse to believe that. In my entire life, there is not one game that I would pay monthly to play - including all of my "favorite" games - Doom 3, Diablo 2, StarCraft, WarCraft 3, Half Life 2, Half Life 1, nothing. I would rather not play games than pay monthly to play a game that I own. You pick any game that I own...add a monthly fee to it, and watch me pitch the game in the garbage.Quote:

Simple as that...take it or leave it
I don't care about the fees. I'm paying about $60 per month for 4 DAOC accounts atm. I just wanted to know if it looks like a sweet game. :)

As for GW...I played an earlier beta and thought it was pretty fun. At the time I was also trying out DAOC and thought that GW had some nice things going for it. I liked the idea of instances...and that everything was kinda close together....no need for running around everywhere...your adventures were just a hop, skip and jump away. The focus was more for the quick in and out playing vs the time consuming level crunching. For me...I was looking forward to GW's realease...but WoW got to me first.
You don't pay monthly fees for GW, but you pay for "chapters" of the game which come out every couple of months. The bottom line is if you want to play a good online persistent world game, you are somehow going to have to pay money for it consistently. Whether its monthly fees, expansion packs, or chapters, the bandwidth and support costs millions per year for MMOs and a company has to make money somehow.
fixed that.Quote:

Half-Life 2 never changes either - if I choose to play that over and over, the content will be the same. Same thing with Guild wars. I can choose to play the same content over and over. What I refuse to do is pay them for the right to play a game that I dropped 50 bucks on. I mean, if I choose to buy WoW, and not pay for it's expansions, I can't continue to play the old content unless I continue to pay for what I already own.
If I buy new chapters, that's just like buying an expansion - another game spun off the original, just like any other game. I just bought Doom 3's expansion - the content will never change. That doesn't bother me. As long as I don't have to pay a fee just to play what I own.
My advice is to watch one of the many Guild Wars movies from the beta weekends. The one I recommend, named Another Weekend, contains footage from the last beta weekend. I've watched it and I think it has very good quality, nice synching with the music, and shows off both the player versus monster and player versus player aspects of GW. Although the film is only from one perspective, it is possible to take a look at the characters around the main character and see how they work. The file is 250 MB in size and runs for 12 minutes. You can download Another Weekend here .
I posted this in October of last year. . . .
It's a fun game but not like DAOC when it comes to RVR but PVE is fun I have done all the mission and have been leading them. The arena is fun but you pretty much can tell what will happen when defending or planning the attack because the arena is small compare to NF of DAOC, where as DAOC many things can change the outcome of a battle.
The game does not require fee and that what makes it worth playing and the graphic's are beatiful.
Craft items is where you collect different parts to get what you need like armor etc. The Interface is nice and I do like the map comp-- which makes it easy to find out who is where when they click on it it will ding and pulse in red.
I know the game very well but have been playing DAOC now but Exodus is now playing the game and they are having fun with the game.
SAS
GW also released a brand new final cinematic trailer today. It is 50 MB and you get it here .
MMORPG monthly fees are no different than a FPS game in my case, because I'm kind of nice. Many of the servers I play on, I'm kind enough to donate some monies to help with server costs. I probably drop 30 bucks a month between WoW, CS, and 2K4.
Interesting post from another forum that I thought i'd share. April 26th the games ship and the server goes live on the 28th.

Guild Wars was designed from the ground up for PvP. It has one of the essentials for good PvP - collision detection. It has another essential for good PvP - highly restricted CC (basically snares).
Class structure is ideal for PvP (after all, they were designed for it). Six classes, choose one as primary, and initially choose one of the other five for a secondary class. Each class has primary abilities only available if primary spec, and other spec lines that allow radically different final characters. You earn respec points in bulk very fast, so respeccing is no problem. Eventually you will be able to respec your secondary classes too, so your charater can be adjusted to fit in with your Guilds grouping tactics.
Every build has a counter.
There are no uber items or abilities within the game, so PvP revolves around skill and tactics (essentially 8 v 8 and G v G with created teams, while you can have a blast with instajoin Arenas too, where the teams are randomly selected).
There is a level 20 cap, quickly and easily reached, because the game proper starts at level 20 (I have solo'd to level 20, using npc henchmen, in less than 20 hours played).
The PvP is so good, I have to be kicked out screaming from the PvP Arenas at the end of events.
PvE is fine, the backstory is fine and developing nicely, crafting is done for you by npc crafters by you just having the right materials and money for the item, so no stupid crafting timesink there. Everybody can salvage stuff by buying salvage kits - no green bar waiting, so you can salvage as you go round.
Guild Wars is an outstanding PvP game, and if you look at who the developers are
http://www.arenanet.com/about/team.html
maybe you can see why.
After almost 4 years in DAoC now, I cancelled last night.
To play Guild Wars.
I wouldn't do something like that without an extremely good reason.
I would probably get it but I heard you would have to pay for additional chapters and I don't have a credit card.
The "chapters" are only supposed to come out once every six months to a year...I think they'll probably be like buying an expansion, and I would expect them to be something that you can purchase in the store (though I could be wrong)...in that case, you can use any for of payment that you prefer! Yippie!Quote:

Where can I purchase Guild Wars?
Guild Wars will be available at your favorite retail location. You will be able to acquire subsequent chapters for Guild Wars via online or retail store.
I am probably going to preorder this game tomorrow if it is like Diablo 2, is it?
