edoG&#39;s avatar (all the .gif avatars I&#39;m making) are done with a combination of adobe photoshop 7 (to edit the .jpg images) and adobe illustrator 7 (to pull all the seperate images together )and then I finalize it with macromedia fireworks which compresses the image down to under 40kb so they can be posted.

The flash file I have for my avatar is done with macromedia Flash MX. Flash makes a .fla file - then you have to convert it to a .swf file. When you have the .swf file you have to host it on a web site and link to it when you upload your avatar.
